Bond Projects Moving Along
On May 6, 2008
voters in the Van Dyke district approved a $62.6 million bond issue
to provide improvements to district facilities. The bond issue is a
six-year program designed to provide building improvements at
Lincoln High, Lincoln Middle, Carlson, McKinley and Lincoln
Elementary schools.
The district
objectives for the bond project, as established by the Citizens and
Staff Advisory Committee, are to provide opportunities for academic
excellence, enhance the learning environment, set the district apart
from other school districts, retain existing students and staff,
attract new families/students to the district and minimize impact on
the general fund.
To date,
construction has been moving swiftly throughout the district. The
following is an update of the projects that are currently taking
place, or will soon begin during Phase I of construction:
Lincoln High School
- The
temporary administrative and counseling offices are complete and
the administrative staff and counselors moved into their offices
on Thursday, April 9. The main office is located in rooms 111-112.
The counseling office is located in room 135.
-
Construction is expected to begin on the new media center and
science labs on May 4. Some of the features of the new media
center include: book stack area to accommodate 9,000 volumes,
computer area/lab for up to 35 students, space to accommodate up
to three separate classes at one time and distance learning lab.
The media center is currently housed in the community room.
Features of the science labs include: Chemistry lab, Biology lab,
Physics lab, Earth Science lab and classroom space large enough to
accommodate 25-30 students. Construction is expected to be
complete on the science labs on August 21 and the media center on
November 21.
- Beginning
Monday, April 20, parents/guardians are asked make some
adjustments to their drop off/pick up routs because of the
construction. Students/visitors will no longer be able to enter
the building from the 9 Mile and Federal entry doors. The district
asks parents to drop students off in the back of the high school
(off MacArthur) or at the second or third entrance doors off of
Federal. Drivers can get to Federal from Ford, Cadillac, Maxwell
or Dodge. For the safety of the students and the construction
workers, please adhere to these new drop-off/pick-up guidelines.
Lincoln Middle School
-
Construction is set to being on the secure entryway, office and
site improvements on May 4. The project is expected to be complete
on August 14.
Lincoln Elementary School
- The
addition and renovations at Lincoln Elementary School are
scheduled to begin on August 10. The building will open its doors
to students in September 2010.
Contractor
guidelines during construction projects
Because
student safety is the district’s number one priority during the
construction projects, the following safety guidelines must be
adhered to and will be enforced by the district’s construction
company Barton Malow in regards to outside contractors in school
buildings:
- All
contractors/visitors must check in at the Barton Malow field
office on Peters and receive proper identification badging before
proceeding to any jobsite within the district.
- Absolutely
no smoking of any kind is permitted on school jobsites or
property.
- Absolutely
no drinking of alcoholic beverages is permitted on school jobsites
or property.
- No
profanity/abusive language on school jobsites or property.
