Dear Lincoln Middle School Families,
At Lincoln Middle School, our goal is to create an environment where students can focus fully on learning and building positive relationships. Last year, we were a no-phone-in-class school. This year, we are taking a small but important step further — Lincoln Middle School will be a no-phone school during the entire school day.
Policy:
Phones must be powered off and stored in lockers from the time students enter the building until dismissal.
Phones may not be in pockets, purses, backpacks, or classrooms.
Phones will not be charged in the building.
Students who need to contact home may use the main office phone.
Parents who need to reach their child should call the main office.
Why This Change?
Research shows that phone use during the school day interferes with learning, focus, and social interactions:
Even the presence of a phone (such as in a pocket) can reduce attention and working memory (Educational Psychology, 2020).
The American Psychological Association links heavy social media use to increased anxiety, depression, and sleep problems among adolescents.
Schools that limit phone use see higher concentration, stronger peer relationships, and improved academic performance.
Keeping phones secured in lockers helps students concentrate, participate more actively, and resolve conflicts face-to-face.
Consequences for Not Following the Policy:
First offense: Phone held in the office until the end of the day.
Second offense: Parent/guardian must pick up the phone.
Third offense: Student loses the privilege of bringing a phone for the rest of the semester.
We understand families want students to have phones for safety before and after school. This policy applies only during school hours.
Thank you for your support in making Lincoln Middle School a safe, focused, and engaging place to learn.
Sincerely,
Gabrielle Avila, Principal
