Dear Lincoln Families,
We want to provide clarification about middle school athletics, particularly regarding football and 6th grade participation, as we have received many questions and concerns.
This fall, more than 55 students came out for football — far more than the number of players our equipment, coaching staff, and playing time could safely accommodate. After reviewing MHSAA regulations and district policy, we must emphasize that middle school football at Lincoln is designated for 7th and 8th graders only. In past years, when numbers were low, some 6th graders were allowed to join. This year, with high turnout, that is not possible.
We understand that this is very disappointing for many of our 6th grade students and families. However, safety, fairness, and consistency across programs have to come first. Sixth graders may be considered for track and wrestling, but in team sports preference will always go to 7th and 8th graders. If there are not enough older students to form a team, then 6th graders may be invited to participate.
We have also learned that some families purchased their own football equipment in hopes that it would secure playing time for their child. Please know that this is not required and was never intended to be a condition of participation. The school provides the equipment needed, and we cannot reimburse families for personal purchases. We are addressing this with our coaching staff to ensure consistent communication moving forward.
While we know this situation has caused frustration, our ultimate goal is for every student to have the opportunity to safely participate in athletics at some point during their middle school years. For our 6th graders, that opportunity will come in the future, and we encourage them to remain involved as team assistants this year or to explore track and wrestling later in the year.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to make Lincoln athletics safe, fair, and positive for all of our students.
Sincerely,
Gabrielle Avila
Principal
Lincoln Middle School
