Dear Lincoln Middle School Families,
At Lincoln Middle School, our goal is to create an environment where students can focus fully on learning and building positive relationships. Last year, we were a no-phone-in-class school. This year, we are taking a small but important step further — Lincoln Middle School will be a no-phone school during the entire school day.
If a student brings a phone to school, it must be powered off and stored in their locker from the time they enter the building until dismissal. Phones should not be in pockets, purses, backbacks, or classrooms at any time. We will also not be charging phones in the building.
If a student needs to contact home during the day, they may go to the main office to make a call. If a parent needs to reach their child, please call the main office.
Why This Change?
Research shows that phone use during the school day can interfere with learning, focus, and social interactions.
A 2020 study in Educational Psychology found that even the presence of a phone — such as in a pocket — can reduce attention and working memory.
The American Psychological Association has linked heavy social media use to increased anxiety, depression, and sleep problems among adolescents.
Schools that remove phones from the learning environment often see higher concentration, improved academic performance, and stronger face-to-face social skills.
Limiting phone access encourages students to engage more with peers, resolve conflicts in person, and participate more actively in class and school activities.
Keeping phones secured in lockers — and out of reach — helps students concentrate and engage more fully in class.
Consequences for Not Following the Policy
First offense: Phone is taken and held in the office until the end of the day.
Second offense: Phone must be picked up by a parent/guardian.
Third offense: Student loses the privilege of bringing a phone to school for the remainder of the semester.
We recognize that many families want their child to have a phone for safety before or after school. This policy applies only during school hours.
We appreciate your partnership in making Lincoln Middle School a safe, focused, and engaging place to learn. If you have any questions, please call the office at (586) 758-8320.
Sincerely, Gabrielle Avila and Jackie Hoekstra Lincoln Middle School
